A Spring Wail

Publication: Melbourne Herald
Date: 23 August 1922

Whilst written as part of the Mooch of Life column written by Dennis, this verse is attributed to H.W.L.S. ??

When the luring ocean rollers
    Tempt the wanton there to frolic,
When the rinks are thronged with
    bowlers
    Sipping Scotch to ward off colic;
When the flappers throng the
    drapers.

And the thought of toil is pain,
I peruse the daily papers
    For the market's latest capers.
And I find my hope is vain,
Railway fares are up again!

When the wattle boughs are yellow,
    And a few short miles away
Some unworried lucky fellow
    Has unsealed his soul to say
That the sunshine laughs and dances
    All about his mountain home,
With half hesitating glances,
    Hopefully I count my chances
With my morning mail—in vain!
    Bertie's Ford is down again!

When the tennis court entices,
    And the moonlit river lures;
When the flapper pines for ices,
    And the sun at last endures;
When I find I'm feeling mopey,
    And I vote the boss a bane.
And I register a hope he
    May not notice I'm so dopey,
Comes new need for brawn and brain,
Fact'ry hands are "out" again!
                                    —H.W.L.S.
