In an address to the Anglican Synod, Archbishop Lees said that Fitzroy had a right not only to the monetary help of Toorak, but to its hand and heart.
Give us yer 'art an' 'and, ole sport!
We are feller men, all right;
If I didn't soil my 'ands with toil
Yours wouldn't be so white.
There is things, per'aps, I owe to you;
And there's things you owe to me;
An' we both should pay the debt
that's due—
A bit uv sympathy.
There's rows we've 'ad, there's things
we've said
In the 'ot an' angry past;
But let's ferget that fuss an' fret;
An' be good pals at last.
There's a real good 'uman Bish come
out
'Oo sizes up us folks,
An' 'e's nothin' loth to see in both
Of us just 'uman blokes.
Per'aps your dad was a workin' man;
My son might be a toff;
So where's the use in cuttin' loose
With swank an' showin' off?
So it ain't no use to sling us dough
An' reckon you've done well;
For the 'aughty look sends us dead
crook,
An' patronage is 'ell!
So, give us yer 'art an' 'and, ole sport,
Fergettin' quids an' rank.
We're Aussies both of a recent growth,
An' there ain't no call to swank.
In the past, it's true, I've shouted you,
An' scorned you, I'll allow;
But let the Bish'av'e 'is fond wish,
An' let's be cobbers now.
