Music Week was officially opened by the Premier, Mr. Lawson, at the Town Hall yesterday. The thermometer registered ninety-three in the shade.
Come let us sing with a right good
ring—
(Crikey! But it's hot!)
A drinking song, or any old thing
(Ninety-three! Great Scott!)
Let the perspiration drip!
Give the key, and let her rip!
Make it something cool.
Who knows
"Where the Icy Arctic Flows"?
What do we care
"For humid air"?
The heat's a trifling thing!
We came to raise
A song of praise,
And we're dash well GOING to sing!
Oh, raise your voice, and let's rejoice—
(Phew! It's getting worse!)
Let songs of Winter be our choice
(Enough to make you curse!)
My collar's getting limp, my hair
is sopping wet; but I don't care!
Sing of Greenland's icy mountains,
Purling brooks and plashing fountains.
Make her go!
It's hot, I know!
But let your voices ring.
We came along
To sing a song,
And we darned well MEAN to sing!
Send it out! Stand up and shout!
(Sudden, what! this heat?)
For we have naught to grieve about.
(Oh, my aching feet!)
Before we reach the end of it
I'll have an apoplectic fit!
Let your voices sound afar!
Sing about "How dry we are"?
The collars wilt
With tuneful lilt,
We'll make the walkin ring.
For we're here to make
The old town wake
And we blinkin well WILL sing.
