“Poppy Day” will be celebrated tomorrow, and part of the proceeds from the sale of poppies will go towards reducing distress amongst soldiers and their dependents.
It seems a long time since the war!
And we, my friends, too soon
Forgot
Who never knew the cannon's roar,
And think you we have paid our
debt?
Our lines go on as much as before,
It seems a long time since the war.
A crippled Digger in the street—
A soldier seeking work in vain—
Some plea for justice, which we
meet
Half-hearted, while we seek for
gain.
These are the signs by which we
know
There was a war—oh, long ago.
But these, my friends, remember
still,
These are the men who can't
forget!
And, through the long years, never
will.
Though we be all too prone to let
The kind years heal an ancient
sore.
Oh, it's a long time since the war.
Five years ago red poppies blew
Where heros, (they were "heros" then)
Mid horrors that we never knew
Strove that we might have peace
again .......
Oh, it's long since the war! and
yet
What of the men who can't forget
