Australians are being urged to eat more fruit, in order to avert the threatened crisis in the fruit-growing industry.
If you're going out with Gertie,
In a sportive mood and flirty,
Have a care!
Cut the chocolates and roses,
And, before the fruit shop closes,
Buy a pear.
Buy an orange or an apple ere you
go to press your suit,
And help the nation grapple with this
awful glut in fruit.
Should you carry on with Carrie,
Do not hesitate or tarry—
Be a sport!
Get a dozen pounds of cherries
Or some nice assorted berries;
Pay your court
With a bag of ripe bananas. As a
lover, be astute
And express your burning passion
with a dozen passion fruit.
There is poetry in peaches,
And a pound of currants teaches
Quite a deal.
E'en a simple water-melon
Handed gracefully to Helen
Will appeal.
Therefore, mix romance and duty,
and buy up the apricot,
For the girl all love a lover who's a
proven patriot.
