The Iconoclasts

The Trove scan of this poem is particularly difficult to read, the text below is my best effort with a few words still unreadable.

December 10 has been definitely fixed as the day for the Federal general election. Mr Hughes has scoffed at the Liberal revival and scorned Labor: Mr Well also condeming Labor dissociating himself from the Liberal movement and criticises Mr Hughes, the Liberal Union and the Country Party have joined forces to fight all and sundry, while the labor Party is out to smash everyone.

The clammer never ends,
The noise, the hubhub, the recriminations
The hot vituperations
Of political controversy sound up and
    down the land.

And
Scarce does the curtain drop
Up at the Spring Street talking-shop.
Before it rises once again
In diverse places and wild noisy man,
With waving arms
Value vague alarms
Shout to high heaven of their fellows
faults
With verbal stoush each savage man
shouting
Was rest
????? his best.
To proove against them all the ????
That politicians may vommit in these
sad silly times
Vowing the other fellow's policy
is but a sham, bluff big stakes
and hollow vain ??????
And ????? this ????? with ????
??????.

My friends, is there amongst them no
    wise man,
No clown with a system and a plan—
No great and noble figure—
No patriotic builder who ...
I beg your pardon. Did I hear you
snigger?
Oh well maybe I'm over sanguine
    yet
I live in hope that some day we may
    get
A statesman who, forgetting party
    strife
Will give his life
To building something for poor old
Australia.
and inter-alia
I'd rather labour hard
And build a simple fowl house in my
yard
And proudly say
"Here's the constructive labour of a
day"
That I would for the sake of silly
spite
Blow up my neighbours house with
dynamite.
