Ballet Adaptation
In 1952, the Ballet Guild presented a dance adaptation of The Sentimental Bloke, marking one of the earliest attempts to interpret C J Dennis’s work through ballet. The production was staged in Melbourne and involved members of the Ballet Guild, an important organisation in the development of Australian ballet prior to the establishment of national companies.
It was a two-act ballet titled The Sentimental Bloke with choreography by Laurel Martyn and music by John Tallis. The work translated the narrative of Bill and Doreen into movement and choreography, accompanied by musical composition tailored to the story. While the production was artistically notable, it was part of a limited performance season rather than a long-running commercial success and did not tour extensively.
