A Fair Dinkum Australian Musical
The 1985 musical The Sentimental Bloke is an Australian theatrical adaptation of C.J. Dennis's classic poems, featuring music by George Dreyfus and book/lyrics by Graeme Blundell. Premiering in December 1985 at the Melbourne Theatre Company's Playhouse, it starred John Jarrett as the Bloke, offering a distinct retelling of the beloved larrikin's romance with Doreen played by Julie Mullins. Ginger Mick was played by Michael Bishop with Faye Bendrups as Rose.
It was subsequently produced in Perth (Western Australian Theatre Company, 1986), Darwin (State Theatre Company of Northern Territory, 1987) and Brisbane (Royal Queensland Theatre Company, 1988).
