The Sentimental Bloke (1963)

ABC Television Ballet Adaptation

In 1963, The Sentimental Bloke was adapted for Australian television as a 30-minute ballet production broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC). This interpretation presented C J Dennis’s well-known narrative through dance, music, and visual storytelling rather than spoken dialogue, reflecting a mid-twentieth-century interest in adapting literary works into new artistic forms for television audiences.

The ballet starred Jack Manuel as The Bloke, Carolyn Harrison as Doreen and Maxwell Collis as The Stror 'at Coot. It was choreographed by Laurel Martin with the Victoria Ballet Company. An article of the time by Ballet Review said "Australian choreographers are to be commended for attempting to use Australian subject matter for their material or inspiration, but so far Australian ballet is still enslaved by the traditional language or technique of classical ballet. Laurel Martin's composition was The Sentimental Bloke in name only. Performed in any other costume, it could have been a series of divertisements in a not so original neo-classical manner."

Although not as widely known as the earlier film adaptations, the 1963 television version is significant for its innovative approach and for demonstrating the continued adaptability of Dennis’s work across different media. Recordings of the production are held by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, where they remain an important record of early Australian television drama and dance performance.
