September 7 – Clarence Michael James Stanislaus Dennis (CJD) is born in Auburn, South Australia
September 10 – CJD is baptised in St. Aloysius' College, Sevenhill, South Australia

1880
October 7 – birth of CJD's brother Francis Albert (Bert)

1886
March 16 – birth of CJD's brother Claude Leo

1890
August 16 – Katherine Dennis, the mother of CJD, dies

1898
February 12 – first CJD work appears in The Critic

1902
April 5 – first CJD work published in Bulletin

1905
August – CJD forms The Gadfly Syndicate with a number of literary friends

1906
February 14 – first issue of The Gadfly

1907
November – CJD leaves Adelaide for Melbourne

1908
Death of CJD's brother Bert as a result of an accident
November 12 – "Austra-laise" awarded a special prize in The Bulletin National Song Competition, and published in magazine

1909
February 24 – last issue (number 154) of The Gadfly

1910
September 28 – James Dennis, the father of CJD, dies

1913
July – publication of BackBlock Ballads and Other Verses
October – CJD introduced to John Garibaldi Roberts and his wife by R.H. Croll
December 20 – first CJD work published in Herald

July – CJD living in Sydney
September 5 – CJD returns to Melbourne

January 28 – CJD appointed to the Navy Office as a clerk
March 23 – CJD writes to publisher George Robertson regarding publishing "The Sentimental Bloke"
October 9 – The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke is published for the first time

1916
February 21 – CJD appointed as secretary to Senator E.J. Russell
February 24 – falls out of moving tram in Collins Street and is badly injured
October 9 – The Moods of Ginger Mick is published for the first time

1917
March – publication of The Glugs of Gosh
April – publication of Doreen
July – CJD marries Olive Herron in Melbourne

1918
March – publication of Digger Smith
September – publication of BackBlock Ballads and Later Verses

1919
publication of Jim of the Hills

publication of A Book for Kids Later republished as Roundabout in 1935.

1922
May 12 – CJD is announced in Herald as commencing a daily column
Dennis makes regular poetry contributions to the Herald until his death in 1938.
