In rain and mud, despite the protests of officials, Mr Dooley, the New South Wales Speaker, held up the Duke’s car near Katoomba, and persuaded the Duke and Duchess to inspect the Anzac Memorial Hospital.
Who barred the progress of a Duke? Dooley! — Dooley! And handed Brass-hats stern rebuke — Dooley! — Dooley! Injustice fired his Celtic blood; He stopped the motor in the mud, And proved Officialdom a dud. Whiroo! — Dooley! The Duke he stared, the Duke he frowned — Dooley! — Dooley. Despite the stare, despite the frown Of that stern scion of the Crown, They couldn’t throw a good man down. Whiroo! — Dooley! Surprised officials stood aghast — Dooley! — Dooley! And sought with savage looks to blast Dooley! — Dooley! But tho’ with threats they clustered round, And tho’ the Duke still stared and frowned, The interloper stood his ground. Whiroo! — Dooley! Who is it has the wheedling tone? Dooley! — Dooley! Who is it’s kissed the blarney stone? Dooley! — Dooley! With pleasant words, meant to beguile He sought the Duchess with a smile And spoke with her the briefest while. Whiroo! — Dooley! The Duchess smiled as well she can — Dooley! — Dooley! Says she, “He is a charmin’ man” — Dooley! — Dooley! She nudged the Duke, and not in vain; He lost his frown and smiled again, And both got out into the rain. Whiroo! — Dooley! Officials spluttered in despair — Dooley! — Dooley! But off he took the Royal pair — Dooley! — Dooley! He triumphed then, say what you may; And Mishter Dooley won the day. Faugh-a-ballagh! Clear the way! Whiroo! — Dooley!
