The Day

In expressing the hope of the Commonwealth Government that Anzac Day this year will be observed throughout the Commonwealth with the solemnity and ceremony that has characterised its observance in previous years, the Prime Minister has issued a message through the Returned Sailors and Soldiers’ League.

Shall it be solemn? Ne’er a man we know
But has some friend who, in days long ago,
Rode, as the knights have ridden in the past,
That England, and humanity, should last.

Shall it be solemn? Is there need to ask
That we, who in these peaceful summers bask,
Had not some friend who marched for you — for me?
Shall it be solemn? How else could it be?
