(with apologies to the Poet Laureate and good resolutions for the Show Holiday)
I must go down to the Show again, to the crowded Show and the din; And all I ask is a big bag to put the samples in, And a good seat in the great stand to watch the horses jumping, And the side shows and the fat pigs and the windmills pumping. I must go down to the Show again, for the call of the blood stock here Is a loud call and an old call that stirs me once a year; And all I ask is a sunny day and the proud cocks crowing, And the stud sheep and the sleek kine and a prize bull lowing. I must go down to the Show again for a bit of city life, To meet Jim and to meet Joe and Bill and his buxom wife; And all I ask is a bit of a yarn of crops and grass and clover; Then the tough toil and the good earth when the year’s spree’s over.
