The Bulletin has been one of the most famous and prestigous Australina weekly periodicals. It was founded in January 1880 and, after a shakey start, established itself as a literary and artistic mainstay of Australian publishing. It had a high reputation for publishing the best in black-and-white art, either illustration or cartoon and published such people as Norman and Lionel Lindsay, Will and Ambrose Dyson, David Low, and Hal Gye. On the literary front the Bulletin published both prose and poetry by Henry Lawson, Banjo Paterson, Mary Gilmore, Steele Rudd, Breaker Morant and C.J Dennis, amongst others. In 1960 the Bulletin was sold to Australian Consolidated Press and changed direction towards a weekly news magazine. It was closed down in 2008.
